How Long Will My Oviedo Wood Fence Last?
For Oviedo home and business owners considering a wood fence, there are often many questions. One of these is how long a wood fence will last. The answer to this question is dependent on many factors. Superior Fence & Rail is here to discuss these and other considerations that help determine the longevity of wooden fences.
How Long Do Wooden Fences Last?
In most cases, you can expect your wooden fence to last up to 20 years (or maybe longer). However, this estimate can be influenced by the type of wood, the climate, and whether the fence is properly maintained.
Superior Fence & Rail of Central Fl only uses heavy-duty Superior pressure-treated pine lumber in all their wooden fence projects. Our wood fencing comes with warranties against termites and rot. Additionally, we custom-build all our wooden fences on-site, ensuring you get the strongest, most well-built fence.
How Does Our Central FL Affect Wooden Fence Longevity?
A well-maintained wood fence in Central Florida’s climate can last 15-20 years if regularly sealed, stained, or painted to protect it from the humidity and weather conditions. This is barring any major weather events, such as hurricanes or prolonged flooding, that could affect the fence.
How To Maintain Your Superior Wood Fence To Ensure A Long Life
Wood fences bring a classic natural look to Central FL properties. It is difficult to mimic the true beauty of natural wood. The color variations, random wood grain, and knot patterns can never be replicated. For this reason, many of our Oviedo clients prefer a wood fence. Superior wood fences offer privacy and protection just like our vinyl and aluminum fences with the authenticity of natural wood.
While synthetic fences require very little maintenance, a Superior wood fence will require maintenance to ensure your fence continues to look beautiful for years to come. Finishing your fence with a sealant, stain, or paint is highly recommended for protection from the effects of sun, rain, and temperature changes on your wood.
Depending on weather conditions and the pre-treatment process of your wood, your wood fence should ideally be sealed, painted, or stained within 30 days to 6 weeks after installation. You do not want to seal your fence immediately after construction. Allowing 4 – 6 weeks will allow the wood to expand and contract with the amount of sunlight and temperature variations of your local climate.
Sealing your wood fence will offer a barrier against water. Wood sealers are available in transparent or semi-transparent options, allowing your wood’s natural beauty to shine through. Applying a wood sealer containing UV stabilizers is recommended to lessen the impact of sun exposure. You should reseal your wood annually for continuous protection.
In order to stain your wood fence, the wood must be completely dry.
Test Your Fence First
To determine if your wood is ready to be stained, sprinkle water onto it surface. If the water beads, your wood is not ready to properly accept staining. Wait a few days, and retest until the water no longer beads from the surface of your wood. Select a stain with the longest manufacturer’s warranty. Ensure your stain also has a UV stabilizer and a water repellent.
When painting your wood fence, choose an alkyd oil-based primer. You must prime every surface of your wood, including cut ends. Finish with two coats of top-quality acrylic latex paint. As with staining, you must ensure your wood is completely dry before priming and painting. Perform the sprinkle test by applying a few drops of water onto the surface of your wood. If any beading occurs, wait and test again in a few days. Paint must be reapplied as needed to maintain a beautiful finish. This could be annually or otherwise, depending on your environmental conditions and the location of your wood fence.
Cleaning your wood fence
A low-pressure cleaning with a pressure washer will help keep the surface of your wood free of dirt and mold. Use a mild soap that is formulated specifically for cleaning pressure-treated wood. Do not use high-pressure cleaning methods or concentrate your pressure washing wand on one area. Once your fence has been cleaned, let it completely dry, and reapply your weather-repelling sealant or stain.
